Matthew 7:2  For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

I was pondering this verse at the beginning of the chapter relating the story of the Prodigal Son and his family   “what measure you mete . .  you will receive”   I thought what amount of love am I measuring out, what compassion, what thoughtfulness, what courtesy, what longsuffering, what forgiveness.  Then at the evening of the day I had a chance to find out. A person did something he had permission to do; I began to judge the way it was done. Why did he do it to begin with?  Why did he do it like that and right there? Didn’t he realize such and such was going to happen and he was right in the way! All the while feeling very superior in my wisdom. Oh but later, in the quiet, the verse came back to me “what measure you mete . .  you will receive” . Was that the way I wanted my actions to be criticized? Was that the way I would want someone to talk about my decision and my lack of thoughtfulness?

My Heavenly Father loves me.

Hebrews 12:5-6 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

I’m learning not to be afraid of the Lord’s judgment or his searching my soul, for his judgment is fair and merciful. If I don’t accept his direction now, I won’t be clear before Him in the last judgment.

Luke 6:35-37 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
